Prádelna z. s.

2019, Český Krumlov (Czech Republic)

We are a collective of people who want to bring everyday life back to our lovely, but overly touristic town of Český Krumlov.

Český Krumlov is a picturesque South Bohemian town that is a must-see for every visitor to the Czech Republic. Tourism has steadily grown here since the 1990s and while that certainly brought a lot of benefits, the steady stream of visitors also puts a heavy strain on the life of the town and its inhabitants. In recent decades, locals slowly started to move out of the historic centre and the town has partly turned into a museum for tourist to take selfies in.

The aim of our collective is to bring everyday life back to our town. We hope to achieve that by reclaiming the partly rundown site of the former laundry service (“prádelna” in Czech), one of the last vacant buildings in the town centre. The building has been successfully used as an experimental art space in the past – we would like to make that a permanent reality and to establish the building as a staple of Český Krumlov’s cultural landscape that will attract locals to spend their free time in the city centre. The core idea of our collective is to offer our peers a multipurpose space they can use freely for whatever activities they come up with, be it concerts, workshops, art installations, film screenings, or club meetings.
